Audrey Thomas thought New Mexico was a place people flew over on their way to Phoenix from Kansas until she found out she had an aunt who lived there whom she never knew about. By virtue of Audrey’s father’s death, Aunt Sally left everything to Audrey: house, car, and a large sum of money in the bank. Audrey’s arrives in Albuquerque expecting to clean out the house and sell it, returning to Kansas City in time to start the fall semester as a high school teacher. Even as her mother urges her to build a new life in Albuquerque because divorce has left her single, Audrey takes only what she needs for the summer.

But three women in the neighborhood– Sally’s friends– whom Audrey names “The Trio” assume Audrey isn’t returning to Kansas and invite her into their fold. But they don’t know that Audrey didn’t know Sally and Audrey’s mission becomes finding out who her aunt was. She begins to read Sally’s journals and finds Sally coming to her and telling her about her past.

The biggest mystery is who her true love Reuben was and why Sally didn’t marry him. When Audrey meets Vince, a doctor who lives around the corner, they slowly forge a relationship, and Audrey’s life begins to change. Her quest becomes to fit into a green dress she finds in Sally’s closet, reminding Audrey that there is still hope for happiness ahead of her.

While Audrey continues to sort through her aunt’s house and figure out who Reuben was, she and Vince begin to weave their lives together and Audrey finds they share more than just a possible future.
